What is Constipation?

Constipation can be referred to as restriction in bowel movements, which is usually associated with small hard and dry excretes of bowel.

Constipation is commonly known as a digestive issue; this issue occurs as a result of diet and can lead to various conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure and cancer. These can arise due to contaminants seeping into the blood stream, and to various parts of the body.

There are a variety of home remedies for constipation that are practiced and have proven to cause great relief.

Water as a home remedy for constipation

Water is believed to be one of the most common home remedies for constipation. Since dehydration is the main cause of restricted bowel movements, regular intake of water can soothe the colon. Doctors recommend eight glasses of water per day, but the average person may not drink this much water. Water that is stored in a copper vessel overnight is said to give an instant relief to constipation if it is taken in the morning on an empty stomach. Additionally, diluting a quarter teaspoon on Epsom salt in half a cup of water can also assist in relieving constipation.

Fruits as a home remedy for constipation

Many fruits contain roughage that adds needed fiber to an individual’s diet, many of which works as good home remedies for constipation.

Guavas in particular, are essential in providing roughage which can be very helpful for constipation; this is due to the seeds it contains. Guava seeds act as displacement for bowel waste. Consuming one or two guavas can be beneficial for the treatment of constipation.

Oranges can also be used as a home remedy for constipation. Oranges are filled with the essentials needed to invigorate the bowel and also aid in the prevention of waste build up in the colon. In addition the orange juice, will aid in eroding bowel waste when consumed in the morning and at bedtime.

Dried Plums (Prunes) are another remedy for constipation. Prunes contain a large amount of fiber which acts as a laxative and helps the stool become soft, it penetrates the walls of the colon and when eaten with lots of water, helps as a good source for relieving constipation.

Exercise as a home remedy for constipation

Exercises can act as instant relief for constipation. A simple ten  minute walk will enhance the muscle tone in the digestive tract. Abdominal crunch is another exercise that is able to improve the   muscle tone in the digestive tract; this can be done by using exercising machines or by simply laying on a surface with both hands behind the head whilst trying to let your head meet your abdomen.

Tips on how to avoid constipation

  • Try to maintain average water intake of eight to ten glasses per day.
  • Eat lots of wheat based products, as they provide needed fiber that prevents constipation.
  • Eat the skin of your fruits as they are filled with needed fiber.
  • Eat a prune at least once per week.
