How to Build a Halfpipe

You need just a few tools to build a halfpipe. Although you can work faster with friends, doing it by yourself is possible.

Required Tools and Materials

Nails
Circular saw
Screws
Metal frame
Measuring tape
Hammer
Wood boards
Plywood (1/4)

Select the Site

You need to choose the right location. It has to be on level ground. Secondly, it must be situated some distance from passing vehicles to avoid any accidents. It’s also important that you consult and check the city / town ordinances too. You must comply with the safety rules and regulations. Get all the permits approved first.

Make Measurements

The next step is to get the dimensions right. To build a halfpipe, make a sketch on paper. Outline the basic design. Note the available space. This will help you decide how high and wide the structure can be. You’ll be able to gauge how many wood boards, nails etc you’ll have to prepare.

Note: pressure treated wood is the safest and most durable material. If that is too expensive get a couple of plywood boards (3/8) and put them together. The double layer provides for a strong foundation.

Make the Frame and Supports

This is for providing a solid base. It must be strong enough to carry your weight. This is a vital point so do not neglect it when you build a halfpipe. You can make it from metal or other material. Ensure that it can be large enough to support the whole structure. Keep it in place using anchors.

To make the anchors just dig a few inches deep in the ground. Put the footings there. Add some cement mixture around the gaps. Let it solidify.

Create the Deck

Get a piece of plywood and mark the curves. Don’t cut this. Use it as a guide for the other pieces. Let this measurement serve as a guide so all the surfaces will be cut the same length.

Join the Pieces Together

The cheapest way is to stick them together with duct tape. You can also use wood glue. The best solution though is to slice scab plates in the wood. Cut them near the seams. To build a halfpipe surface screw each board at the seams.

Tips

This is a very basic design. You can add channels and extend it. This will allow you and others to try different skating moves.

If you want to change the wood shape, do the following: hose the wood piece for 60 minutes or so. Place a heavy object on it. Remove the object when the wood dries. Bend it, and the shape will stick.

If you have no experience in skating, practice the basic moves first. Always wear appropriate gear. This includes the wheels, pads and helmets. Always check the skateboard before using. You need to make sure it’s still in good shape.

There really isn’t much you have to do to build a halfpipe. If you are going to make one, it’s also best if you consult with your friends. That way you can get the most out of the entire skating experience.
