How to Build a Hydro Generator

If you want to build a hydro generator, there are several components that must be assembled. When you have the equipment, here are the steps you need to take.

Required Tools and Materials

Plastic jug (4 liters)
Cork (1 centimeter)
Scissor nips
Coping saw
Magnetic compass
Emery board
Magnets
Plastic spoons (10 pieces)
Glue sticks
Electrical tape
Glue gun
Pencil sharpener
Utility knife
Black marker
Cardboard (corrugated)
Dowel (wood)
White glue
Volt meter

Create the Stator and Motor

Take the cardboard and make two 6 cm circles in it. Cut it with the knife, use a pencil to note the middle point. Create a 1 centimeter hole in one circle.

Create the Coils

The next step to build a hydro generator are setting the coils. Take the cardboard and fold it. It should be a jig 3 x 16 centimeters. Grab the enamel wire and construct four coils. Put 200 wraps on the jig. Make sure there is about a 3 centimeter slack at both edges.

Unwrap the coils and apply some electrical tape. Get the emery board and take out a centimeter of enamel. Remove it from the wire carefully. Keep doing this until the enamel around the 1 centimeter section has been removed.

Connecting the Coils

Get the cardboard you made earlier. Put the coils there. When you build a hydro generator, avail of the lines you drew earlier. Make sure that the coils are set down in clockwise and counterclockwise directions. The alternation is needed for electricity to flow. Be sure that the coils are linked.

Testing with the Voltmeter

The voltmeter should register 10 ohms at most. If it does it means your setup was correct. Go back to the coils and glue it to the cardboard. Make four incisions in the cardboards.

Create the Magnet

Take the second circle you made. As in the first circle, draw lines and make a hole in its midst. Put the magnets there using the north and south polarity.

Make the Turbine

Sharpen the dowel with the sharpener. Now cut eight slices in the cork. Take out the spoon handles (but leave a centimeter of it). Put the handles inside the cork. Ensure the dishes are oriented the same way.

Create the Container

To build a hydro generator container, do the following: slice the plastic jug bottom. Make a hole on both sides of the jug. Set the stator (the one with the coils) on the jug. Make a few incisions in the jug. Put some brass pins on the stator and put it on the container.

Putting it All Together

Saw a couple of plastic tubing. It has to be a centimeter long. Utilize the dowel as a starting point and add the rotor, tubing and the stator disc. Add in the container, tubing and turbine last.

Tips

Take care when handling the coils and removing the enamel. When you are involved in this project, the key is patience. It can take a while, but you will get it done. Just take your time. As long as the measurements are correct, you’ll get the desired results.

Knowing how to build a hydro generator is not just another science project. It can be used to power everything from a house to a factory. With this small project, you’ll get an idea of its potential.
