How to Build a Loft Bed

If you have a small room it makes sense to build a loft bed. You’ll be able to allocate the space for other belongings and furniture. To create one you should assemble the necessary tools and materials.

Required Equipment

Mattress (to be used as a frame)
Lag bolts
Saw
Wood (2 x 4 and 4 x 4)
Screws

Planning and Research

First make a note of the measurements of the bed. This will help decide how much plywood you will need. Decide early on what type of wood to use. Also have several screws and bolts in hand. Take a look at the basic designs in books. This will help you visualize and plot the overall shape.

Making the Box

To get the right size, you should use a frame. Cut some plywood and place it around the mattress. Use the 2 x 4 wood to make the box. As you build a loft bed, do not make it the exact size of the mattress. Leave some space for the linen. Use the screws to fasten the sides together. Place plywood on top of it. Put some screws every two feet. This will fortify the container.

Making the Loft

Before you start you should decide on its height. Cut some 4 x 4 boards. Put each one in the proper position. When all four are aligned, lift the bed up. Ask someone to help you out. Use bolts to secure the bed in place. Make sure that the bolts are fastened tightly. To build a loft bed successfully you should double check this feature to ensure it is done right. It is very important.

Making the Ladder

Use a saw to cut the wood. They need to be at least two inches thick. The bed’s height determines how many steps are needed. Nevertheless, the space between should be ten inches to a foot wide. Secure them in place using screws or bolts. The two inch slats are the minimum. If a large person is going to use it, add more inches.

You can also add a railing. Just cut a piece of wood and set it between the posts. Bolt them in place. Finally you can put the mattress in place.

Tips

If you are not sure how to build a loft bed, have someone work with you. The truth is that you will need help when it comes to hoisting the bed up. It is also important that you use large bolts. This will ensure that it is securely in place. For glossy wood types, staining is a better option than painting.

As always take precautions. If your eyesight is sensitive, wear some eye gear to protect it from any splinters that fly off when you saw wood. If you have no experience in using these tools, get help from a qualified person. Unlike making chairs, this is more complex.

It can be hard to build a loft bed, but patience will help. There’s no need to hurry with the task. As long as you follow the guidelines, you’ll be able to set one up in your room.
