Make a Design Drawing
Get some pictures from books or the Net. These should give you an idea of what the place should look like. There are also design kits for sale. Use these as a template. Make changes as you see fit. At this point you should decide on the dimensions. Then you can calculate how much material you’ll need. You’ll be able to check the costs if you build a log cabin.
Site Considerations
You’ll likely want a place with natural scenery around. But you should clear part of the building area. Use a shovel, rake and other tools to remove grass, rocks etc. Be certain to get the permits and papers approved before chopping off any trees in the way.
Prepare the Logs
Check your blueprint to see how many logs are needed. When you have the supplies, prepare them for usage. Take away the leaves, bark and branches. If you bought them this step probably won’t be necessary.
Create the Foundation
Dig a hole for the posts. Make it at least a couple of feet deep. When at the right level, put in the posts. To build a log cabin post well, use reinforced concrete to secure them.
Create the Floor
Use plywood for the flooring. Cut the desired area size. Use the tape measure to get the right size for the beams and jousts.
Create the Walls
Make notches to attach the logs. When cutting and sawing, pay attention to the shape. These need to fit one another. If you made or bought a blueprint, check it for reference. Don’t make the logs of the same length. Make some smaller to fit in the windows and doors.
Create the Loft and Gables
Cut the lumber and set them into the walls. Check the height to make sure it’s correct. It is possible to put wood board here and make a secondary floor.
Create the Roof
One of the hardest tasks when trying to build a log cabin is the roof. Start with the gables. Construct them one at a time until you get to the loft support level. When you reach the topmost roof level, put the ridge pole in place. For the roof frame, use lumber. For the underside, use plywood. Apply sheeting.
Finishing Touches
When the main structure is complete, add the other components. Start with the windows and doors. Screw the hinges securely. Include stairs if there is a second floor. Other features you can add include the chimney. Adding the sections can be made easier by getting ready made kits.
Careful planning is required if you attempt to build a log cabin. Although complex, it can be accomplished by persevering.
