How to Build a Model Sailboat

In spite of how they look, learning how to build a model sailboat is not actually that hard. A lot of the things that you’ll need are actually available in stores, if not in your home already.

Required Tools and Materials

Canvas
Handsaw
Glue (waterproof)
Drill
Paper
Balsa wood (2 x 4 x 8 inches long)
Sandpaper
Scissors
Staple gun
Box cutter
Dowel

Create the Hull

The first thing you’ll make is the hull, or frame. Use the box cutter and make incisions and cuts in the wood. Just trim enough so that the wood has a pointed end. Now shear a little bit from the sides. This will form the bottom part of the vessel. To build a model sailboat properly, make sure the wood is angled.

After you make the hull, apply sanding. This should give the model a more attractive shape and appearance.

Create the Support Mast

This can consist of a single vertical wood beam. Shape and cut it to your desired height. Now drill an opening in the hull. Make it as least 1/2 inch deep. Take the dowel. Use the handsaw and cut it to 6 inches. This needs to be cut straight. Sand it. Take a good look at it and remove any splinters. If you’re going to build a model sailboat for kids, sand it to get rid of the sharp edges.

Put the Mast in Place

Before putting the mast, pour some glue in the hole. Now put in the support mast. Be liberal with the glue you put in. Wipe away any that oozes out when you insert the mast. Depending on the glue type, this can take a few minutes to dry, or a whole day.

Create the Sail

Get some canvas. You can make it a 4 x 4 or any size you like. The shape must be an equilateral triangle. Apply some glue on its side. Stick it to the support mast. Fold the canvas on the mast.

Create the Rig

The last step to build a model sailboat is to make the rigging. Take some string and cut it. Stick it to the sail’s side attached to the dowel. Get the staple gun and secure the opposite end of the string on the boat hull.

Tips and Warnings

Although not necessary, a keel adds to its appearance. Just saw a triangular piece of wood and set it at the lower part of the boat.

There are several designs you can use as a guide. Look at different pictures of sailboats. Check the color arrangements and what parts they are made of. You can use them in your creations.

Be careful when using saws and other carpentry tools. It’s okay to let the kids watch, but do not let them use these tools. Do not expose them to the paint unless they are wearing a mask.

Once you learn to build a model sailboat, you’ll be able to make several in no time. By painting them different colors and using different designs on the sail, you and your kids are sure to have plenty of fun.
