How to Build a Patio

If you want to build a patio, you can do so provided you have the right tools. Also you must have a good strategy. The following will show you how to create one.

Required Tools and Materials

Mason’s cord
Mallet (the rubber type)
Shovel
2 x 4 wood boards (6 ft and another a foot long)
Paving bricks
Paving sand
Post (4 x 4)
Gloves
Measuring tape
Brush or broom

Choose the Location

Most will place it near their house. When you find the spot, remove any rocks, grass and other debris. This will make digging easier. It is also to your benefit to have a sketch of the structure. That will function as a visual aid.

Measure the Spot

The next step to build a patio is measure the area it will occupy. Use the measuring tape. If needed you can use a mason’s cord. Ensure that all sides are measured. You will come up with something like 15 x 15 (225 sq ft). This allows you to determine how many paving bricks are required. Just to be sure get a few more than needed in case some get broken.

Dig the Area

Excavate a hole at least four inches deep. Rake to make the surface as plain and smooth as possible. If needed, use a tamper as you build a patio. Now you can add in the paving bricks to see if they fit. Remove them after verifying they match. Use the 2 x 4 to check if the drainage decline is correct before proceeding.

Add the Sand and the Paving Bricks

Pour the sand over the surface. For best results make it at least a couple of inches deep. Utilize the 4 x 4 to flatten it. You can also use the 2 x 4 to further level it. Now you can add the bricks. If you are having trouble aligning, utilize the rubber mallet. Check the height to make sure it is correct. It may be necessary to remove some sand when you build a patio.

Finishing Touches

After all the bricks are in place, top it with sand. Use a broom to put the sand between the spaces.

Tips

Rain can cause the sand to dissipate so add some more if needed. Make sure you use paving sand and nothing else. Any other sand type will be insufficient.

The process is straightforward but it requires a lot of work. Take frequent breaks especially if it is a hot day. But you shouldn’t hurry. Some of the bricks are brittle and could break easily. Avoid stepping on any brick if it’s not yet level. It will break in two.

Be creative with the pattern. Some bricks are decorated and they can make for interesting patterns. The purpose of this structure is to beautify your home, so make it as attractive as possible.

Never lift the bricks with your bare hands. Use the gloves so you won’t get blisters or roughened skin. As long as you take your time, you will be able to build a patio.
