How to Build a Pool Deck

Trying to build a pool deck is not as hard as it seems. Some knowledge of carpentry tools is needed though. You should also have an idea of the layout of your pool.

Required Tools and Materials

Lumber
Saw
Braces
Concrete pier blocks
Metal corner brackets
Screws and bolts

Prepare the Flooring

You can use 6 x 2 boards. You can use larger or smaller boards, it’s up to you. First assemble all the pieces in the area. Line them up accurately. Use the metal brackets to link each one.

Make the Support

The frames you made require support. The posts’ sizes are usually 4 x 4. Cut them from the wood board. Or you can buy ready made ones from home improvement stores. This will help you build a pool deck easily. First, put the concrete blocks in place. Set the posts there. Check the pool level and cut the posts. The posts and the pool need to be the same height. Now, use the screws to secure the posts in place.

Install the Braces

These diagonal braces must be put in along the perimeter. The deck boards must be set to a frame side. Now cut the boards so it can be inserted in the other end. The boards can be longer than the frame. It can be modified later on with the saw.

Set the Rail

Make the rail from the wood boards. Put a 2” or 4” cap on it. Align this with the main rail. When you make the guard rail, bevel them. Allocate a 4 inch space for each as you build a pool deck.

Make the Stairs

You can use stringers for this task. The 2 x 12 sizes will do nicely. Set the stringers on the concrete pier blocks. This is much better than planting them in the ground. That option makes them vulnerable to sinking when the surface gets wet. Use precut stringers for this job. It is easier and faster to work with.

Design Considerations

Some decks have large areas. This is ideal if you like lounging by the site. If you just want an entry way, you don’t have to make it a large one. When designing also consider the motor and other vital parts. Be certain that you don’t lose access to these areas when you build a pool deck.

To make work easier you should set aside all the accessories when you are designing the site. This will allow you to focus on just the work. Given the immensity of the work, you should consider getting help. You can do this by yourself but having someone help you will speed things up a lot.

Finally, the quality of your work depends on the material you have. If you want it to last, get good lumber. A lot of good ones aren’t that costly. You just need to compare prices to get the best deal.

If you want to build a pool deck, having a sound plan is necessary. By taking stock of what the area looks like, you‘ll have a simpler time getting the job done.
