How to Build a Porch

To build a porch you should have the right kinds of materials. The procedure is actually quite simple, but if you are having a hard time, you should get some help. Someone who can assist you when you are cutting and putting the pieces together will be a great help.

Required Tools and Materials

Bolts
Screws
Nails
Hammer
Handsaw
Concrete anchors
Plastic anchors
Concrete mix
Tape measure
Pencil and papers for sketching designs
Wood (2 x 4 and 2 x 2)

Draw a Basic Design

It helps to draw a sketch of the structure. This will help keep the design true to form as you make each piece. You should also make notes of the measurements you take. This blueprint can be made up of simple lines, but be sure it’s serviceable. Use it as reference when you build a porch.

Make the Sill Plate

This can be done with the 2 x 4 boards. Use the measuring tape to get the right proportions. Saw along these lines. When you have made the boards, set them down. Make sure that the cement has dried first. To fasten use concrete anchors for the sill plate.

Making the anchors is easy enough. Use the drill to make holes in the concrete. Put in the anchors. Add the bolts and set the sill plate in place. You should also set an additional wood board on top of the sill plate. This will help build a porch that is robust.

Putting in the Stud

Put a stud on the wall above the sill plate. Fasten it; do not put it there permanently. Take the wood board and set it against the roof. Screw it to the stud. Place a mark on this point. If there are any base plates on the door, cut them with a handsaw.

Adding the Door Frame and Rails

Use a chalk to draw a line 32 inches from the ground up. The targets are the wall studs. Use the saw to create the top rail. Take some nails and fasten it into the wood. They should be set horizontally among two studs.

As you continue to build a porch, take the measuring tape. Calculate the distance between the sill plate and the upper rail. Slice a 2 x 2 wood board to the right length and set them properly.

Finishing Touches

Before adding the chairs and other furniture, do the paint or stain job. If you used dull colored wood, use a brown or wood like color for paint. If the wood is glossy, a stain will be the more attractive option. Allow it sufficient time to dry up. Make sure not to touch any part of it until it dries.

Most people who perform carpentry work use protection for their eyes. They also don masks when painting or staining. You should too.

The steps required to build a porch are numerous. But they aren’t something anyone with determination can’t carry through to the end. By following the instructions, even someone with limited skills can create this project.
