How to Build a Raft

Rafts can be very fun, inexpensive and easy to make. This simple thing can turn an ordinary day into something enjoyable and relaxing. By learning how to build a raft, people can explore rivers, lakes and other bodies of water without having to spend too much.

Materials

In order to learn how to build a raft, gather first all the important materials needed for the job. One of them is the drill, which will be used to make holes. Oil drums are also needed to make the raft float. Furthermore, bring in a saw, a strong cord and a couple of small wood. More importantly, get buoyant yet durable logs that will surely float, preferably four to five pieces.

Steps

At the ends of the logs, cut notches that will make them fit into a frame. Notch them all together. Use the cord to bind the wood and logs together. Make sure that they are held in place tightly. The materials must continue to stay together even when strong pressure is applied on them.

When the frame is complete, add some logs inside it. Aside from logs, pieces of flat wood can also be used as alternative materials. Use the drill to make some holes in order to attach the cords. Tie each material properly. Double check the knots and be sure not to leave any loose ends.

Attach the drums underneath the raft. Use reliable knots to hold them in place. They will make the entire structure float. If there are no drums available, other flotation devices can be used in exchange for these floating materials. When all the materials are tied in their proper places, check each knot once again. Be sure that all are held tightly in place. For seemingly weak spots, tie additional knots to make the structure stronger.

Before using the raft, get a long strong pole. The material must not break easily. Use the pole to drive. Use it to go left, right or forward.

When rafting, it is always best to wear life vests. This will ensure safety in case the project fails. Any untoward incidents can be prevented easily when all the necessary preparations are made. In addition, be sure to test the boat first before using it in traveling longer distances. Moreover, do this project in a place near where it will be used to make things easier. Transferring the boat from one place to another is harder because it becomes much heavier when all the materials are installed on it.
