Learning to build a ramp can be a useful skill as they have many different functions. The good thing is the basic principles are applicable to all types.
Required Tools and Materials
Pressure treated wood
Hammer
Saw
Nails, screws and bolts
Concrete mix
Make the Layout
There is no standard shape. The slope can be of any degree or inclination. It depends on what you’re making it for. Make a note of all the measurements. If you’re making one for people to cross, it must take disabled people into account. Most countries have specific rules for this. Check your country’s rules and regulations.
Prepare the Area
Start to build a ramp by clearing the area. The ground has to be level. Dig and pour some concrete mix. Level the mixture. Give it 24 hours to dry up. When it’s dry you can proceed. Even if you don’t need to use cement, it is best to make this project after the rainy season or winter.
Put in the Posts and Supports
You can make the footings from cement blocks, bricks or wood. Cut and saw them as necessary. Use cement anchors to hold each post / footing in place. If you did not pour cement on the ground, dig a hole and put the footing a few inches deep. The minimum space for each post is five feet. This is true no matter how long you build a ramp.
If there are turnarounds or curves, put four posts there. For more support, put a Sona Tube in the support hole. Put some mixed cement in it. Put cross joists on each post before putting on the deck.
Set the Deck in Place
Make the deck from the wood board. Make it a few inches thick to support a lot of weight. You can use any wood type. However it needs to be pressure treated. This is to avoid decay. For the space in between the boards, utilize galvanized nails. Make sure that the deck is securely in place using the necessary bolts and screws. Safety is crucial when you build a ramp.
Finishing Touches
For support you can add railings. This can be made with the wood boards too. Secure them to the deck using the bolts and screws. Keep in mind that states have codes and regulations; follow them if you want to add railings.
Tips
If you are making one for skateboard use, use plenty of curves. This will make it more challenging. At the same time keep safety in mind. Some states and cities have certain rules about skateboard use. Check with the local authorities first. This is true even if you are making one near your home.
If yours has a 180 degree turn, pay extra attention to the measurements. A single mistake can throw everything off course. Railings are essential if the platform is high and used by people.
Although it looks simple, there are certain principles to remember when you build a ramp. If you keep them in mind, you’ll be able to make the structure properly.
