How to Build a Roller Coaster

You can buy one in stores, but it’s more fun to build a roller coaster on your own. You only need a little bit of planning. You also need the following close at hand.

Building material (wood, plastic or metal)

Base

Get Some Reference Images

There are many different types of coasters. Get several pictures and examine each one. Incorporate the desired elements in your own creation. Trying to improvise when you’re constructing it isn’t a good idea.

Also think about the overall size. This is necessary for you to obtain the appropriate materials. While there are several materials you can use, wood is the most popular.

Create the Base

Start to build a roller coaster by measuring the base. Cut the material if necessary. You can make it any shape you want but it should support the entire structure. Get the driller and make openings in the base. This will be where you’ll connect the coaster.

The next step is to paint the foundation. If you don’t, it will be hard to paint when the coaster is attached to it. After painting, give it time to dry.

Create the Tracks

Start from the ground up. The best are the long straight ones. Get some glue and stick it to the foundation. Make sure that it’s firm because this will be the connector to the rest of the curves and loops. Now you can proceed to build a roller coaster curve or “hill”. Allow yourself to be creative. There is no standard design of course. But here are a few things to keep in mind.

After the first hill, make the exit a little low. The next hill should be as high as the first. Now add some loops. These can be elliptical or the usual circular type. Again, have some pictures with you for reference. While you want it to look realistic, don’t let that stifle your creative side.

Adding the Cars and Scenery

They don’t have to be cars actually. Some people use trains and others colorful marbles.

That’s basically all you have to do to build a roller coaster. However you can add to the surroundings. Add some grass, a house or dolls around it. You can even make a whole series of coasters. You can paint several cylinders and bottles or coat them with stickers. You can opt for a theme, like a jungle or space appearance. If you want this look, be sure to paint it in the right colors.

Tips and Warnings

It’s not a good idea to have very small children with you. They could get stuck in the glue or mess with the driller and nails.

Donning a face mask when painting is a good idea as it can protect you from toxins. When using the drill, wear gloves. You should also let the glue dry at the prescribed period. Used prematurely the structure could collapse.

Understanding how to build a roller coaster is not that hard. It’s actually a fun process. With a lot of drawing and thinking of themes, the construction process can be as fun as watching the cars move along the track.
