It does not require the help of professional services to complete.
Materials Needed
For those who are planning to learn how to build a screen door, they need these simple materials and tools to get the job done. These include c-clamps, a circular saw and tape measure. In addition, be sure to bring a square, a chisel and utility knife. Likewise, be sure to get a 5/4 lumber, a glue brush and polyurethane glue. Other materials that can be of great help for the complete of this project are spade bits, a drill and ¼-by-3/4 screen molding. Aluminum screening, a staple gun and lots of staples are also needed, as well as other items such as screen door hardware, 1-inch nails and 1×1 lumbers. A varnish or paint can enhance the appearance of the door.
Steps
Buy the various parts of the screen door. Do not forget the rails and lumber. Cut them according to the length and width of the door. After cutting up and laying the different parts for this simple house fixture, it is now time to combine its various parts. Before gluing them together, check first if the parts perfectly fit one another. Lay the pieces side by side with one another without actually attaching them together.
Once the desired fit for the different parts is achieved, get the glue brush and then dip it right into the polyurethane glue. Use it to glue the pieces together. The joints must form a square. To do this, use c-clamps to hold them together. Wait until the glue dries.
When the frame is finished, install the cleats. Attach ¾-by-¾-inch cleats to the 5/4-door frame. For this particular step, you can use either glue or nails. After attaching the cleats, paint the wood. Choose the right color or paint that perfectly goes well with the overall appearance of your house. Wait for the paint to dry and then put the screen.
Staple the screening right into the frame of the door. Stretch the material completely. Be sure to make it tight and then start stapling it at the bottom and the top parts. Use the utility knife to cut the excess screening.
It is now time to put on the hardware for the screen door. Position the screen door at the main door opening. Locate the main door trim and then attach the hinges of the new fixture right into it. Choose a nice metal handle. Put screws to attach it right onto the wooden part of the screen door.
Additional Tips and Other Important Information
Put a lock on your new door fixture for additional security. Simply screw half of the lock right into the new fixture while attach the other part of it at the main door trim. Construction experts recommend the use of galvanized hinges in order to prevent the new door from squeaking. All throughout the project, it is best to wear protective gears like working gloves and safety glasses.
