How to Build a Skateboard Ramp

To get your skill level up with the pros, you can build a skateboard ramp. It isn’t as hard as you may think. You only need some equipment and a bit of creativity.

Required Tools and Materials

Boards (2 x 4 and 2 x 6)
Plywood
Hammer
Bendable wood
Pen and paper for sketching
Screws or nails
Screwdrivers for the screws
Saw (any type)

Design a Layout

Sketch on paper how you want it to look. Decide if it’s a jump, a quarter pipe or something else. There are several styles to choose from. There are sketch layouts you can download off the Net. You can use these as template. When you have made one up, use this as reference when you start cutting the wood.

Choose the Site

A wide open area is needed if you are going to build a skateboard ramp that is large. Make sure the site has a plain surface. Measure the area that the whole structure will occupy. This serves two purposes. It helps you check how much wood you will need and also the costs of starting the project.

Create the Transition

Get the plywood and draw the curve. This is the first step and should be done accurately. Make the right measurements and cut it. If you’re making a small jump cut two of these pieces. You will also need a pair if you want a quarter pipe.

Create the Ramp Skeleton

Prepare the 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 boards as you build a skateboard ramp. Saw as many pieces as needed. Cut them according to the prescribed width and length. It’s important you stick with the dimensions specified in your layout. This ensures you will not run out of material.

Take the curves you made earlier. Join them with the boards you just cut. Follow the curves to get the shape right. Put a couple of boards along the ramp bottom. Apply cross boards for more support.

Finishing Touches

Get the bendable wood. These are available in home improvement stores. You can make wood bendable by soaking it in water but it’s best to just buy one. Cut and saw this to match that of the skeleton base. Hammer the nails or use screws to put it in place. Be certain when you build a skateboard ramp that the alignment is correct.

Tips

The base is very important. Make it large and it has to be secure. Generally, a low transition is best for a jump type. For the half or quarter pipe, it is the opposite.

Treated materials are the best choice. They are more expensive but are more durable. They can withstand weather changes and frequent use more than the ordinary material.

Wear a helmet at all times. Check the quality of your skateboard and make sure it’s not damaged.

As one of the most popular extreme sports today, you can join in the fun when you build a skateboard ramp. With just a few tools, you can get one or several done without a lot of trouble.
