Although they look complex, you might be surprised at how simple it is to build a speaker box. Armed with the appropriate devices, you’ll be able to create one or several in no time.
Required Tools and Materials
Wood (at least 6 pieces, same size)
Screws and screwdrivers
Wood adhesive
Braces
Fiberglass
Silicon
Black speaker cloth
Driver for speaker
Create the Side Boards
Get the six pieces and make sure they’re of the same length. Alternatively you can get one large board and cut it into six. These will make up the top, bottom and sides of the container.
Get another wood board and slice it into a circular shape. This is for the driver. Put the driver in the panel. Continue to build a speaker box by setting the screws into the driver openings.
Attach the Box Together
Use the driller to make holes in the side boards. Fasten all the screws in. Put the black cloth on the front part. This is to conceal the driver. Apply some wood glue to keep the cloth in place. Using both glue and screws is recommended here.
Create the Wire Openings
To connect the wires, drill a hole in the box’s backside. This allows you to put the wires from the speaker to an outlet in the wall.
At this point also add braces. This is needed to keep the sound consistent. Without a brace or wedge the sound will be unsteady. Of course, when you build a speaker box, the sound quality is the primary concern.
Improving the Sound
Get some silicon and put them around the speaker corners. This keeps air inside and improves the audio quality. You can also fill it with fiberglass too. This is for insulation. You might want to experiment here. The amount of fiberglass you stuff can change the sound. Add and remove as needed until you get the vibrations you want.
Tips
Put some paint on the box after it’s done. This will go a long way towards increasing its durability. Be as fancy and creative as you want. The colors and layers won’t affect the sound at all.
Some wood boards are treated. These are better and stronger than the ordinary wood. They are of course, more expensive. If you want to build a speaker box with ordinary material, stain the wood. When buying materials, avoid those with splinters and rough parts. Too many of these and even staining won’t be of much help.
Be careful when you install the wiring. If you’re not familiar or sure, get a professional to do it for you. Make sure that any adaptors or outlets you use are in good condition. Be sure to test the outlet first to make sure it works.
The driver you use is important of course. Knowing something about these drivers and how they work will come in handy.
Once you learn to build a speaker box, you’ll be able to make modifications to it quickly. Just keep experimenting with the stuffing you put in, and you’ll get the sound balance you want.
