How to Build a Swing Set

You can build a swing set easily with the right tools and some planning. You can start off by assembling the following paraphernalia.

Required Tools and Materials

Metal bars
Wood
Hammers
Screws

Pre-built Sets

You can buy a set if you want it done in a hurry. Just go to a home improvement store and look for one. Aside from the trapeze bars and slides some also have a tree house.

If you choose this option the building process will be straightforward. Take out the pieces. Assemble as indicated in the user guide. Have some nails, screws and hammers ready. Before letting the kids play check to make sure everything is secure and tight.

Creating Your Own Set

If you want to build a swing set on your own you need to plan everything in advance. Aside from the basic tools, thoughts about the design should be given.

Consider what components you want to add. This will depend on the kids who are going to use it. If they are the athletic type, monkey bars should be included. Aside from the swings, they might like a slide and a tree house too.

Next step is to buy a construction plan. This allows you to get a firm idea of what you should do. If you are sure about the layout, you can draw it yourself. Make it as detailed as possible.

Choosing the Site and Safety Issues

Choose a wide open area. This is necessary when you build a swing set. Since they’ll be getting plenty of exercise playing, fresh air is needed. Assess the ground surface. It has to be softened up to avoid accidents. Put in some ground rubber over the entire projected area. You can also put in mulch.

Make sure that there are no trees near the swing itself. If the kid goes up high he or she must not get hit by a branch. Additional precautions include a fence post. Make it a couple of feet deep at least.

Cutting and Molding the Pieces

Keep safety in mind as you build a swing set. Round off all the edges. All pre sold kits incorporate this in their design and yours should too. When you drill openings make certain they are fit for the screws and bolts. Avoid any gaps between the joint components. If there is space a finger might get stuck there.

Finishing Touches

If you are going to make the swings with wood, apply staining and sanding. This will remove any splinters. When painting use non lead type. Give it sufficient time to dry out. Wear a mask as you paint. Protective eyeglasses will be needed if you’ll be cutting and sawing the pieces.

Upon completion clean everything up. Sweep away any splinters on the ground. Also check for any nails or screws that may have been left on the ground. You might also want to seat on the swing to check its firmness.

After you build a swing set, always test it. After making sure everything is as it should be, you can let the kids play there.
