How to Build a Toy Box

It is part of the nature of kids to be disorganized because of their lack of knowledge and sense or order. By giving them toy boxes, adults can easily teach their kids to organize their toys properly. Learning how to build a toy box is very simple. All it takes is the right materials and the knowledge on how to do this particular task correctly. At the same time, making this project can be a perfect bonding moment between parents and their children.

Materials Needed

The materials needed to learn how to build a toy box are quite easy to find. These include a ¾-inch plywood, a saw and stencils. In addition, this task also needs paint, paintbrush and primer to decorate the box later on. Three pieces of hinges, 18-pieces of 1½-inch screws and wood putty are also needed for the opening of the box.

Steps

Get the plywood and then use the saw to cut six different pieces. For the top part, cut a piece measuring 36-by-18 inches. For the bottom part, cut another piece, this time a little bit smaller at 36-by-16½. For the front and back parts, cut two pieces measuring 36-by-24 inches each. For the sides, cut two pieces measuring 22½-by-16½ inches each.

Simply put down the bottom part. Use a couple of 1½-inch screws to attach the front piece. Do the very same step for the back part. Gently slide one of the pieces for the side in between the position of the front and back pieces. Attach it using two more 1½-inch screws. Get the other piece for the other side. Slide it once again at the opposite side. Use a couple more 1½-inch screws to attach this side to the remaining side of the box.

When the pieces for the bottom, side as well as front and back are all attached in their proper places, attach the three hinges to the lid. Place one at the middle, another one three inches towards the upper part of the box and the other one three inches towards the lower part of the box. Put the lid on top of the box and then screw the hinges to connect the lid with the body. Put some wood putty on the screw holes to conceal them. Let it stand for some time. When the wood putty dries out, get sandpaper and then use it to smoothen out the edges of the box.

When the toy box is finished, it is now time to personalize it with paint and decorations. Apply a coat of primer on the outer part of the box. Let it dry for some time. After that, spray a base coat. Let it dry once again. Spray another coat if necessary. Using a light pencil, simply trace your child’s name on top of the box. Let the kids paint their names on the box to give them something to do. Wait for the paint to dry and then use it to organize toys.
