How to Build a Trailer

It is not that hard to build a trailer. You can make one yourself, but it will be easier if you gather and prepare the requisite equipment first.

Required Tools and Materials

Base trailer
Power drill
L brackets
Plywood (several pieces)
2 x 4s
Wiring
Bolts and screws
Hammer
Saw
Tape measure
Trailer lights

Get the Permits

Some states have certain regulations concerning making these structures. Check with yours first. While you are there, you can inquire about any safety measures or specifications you must meet.

Assess the Design

You need to determine what exactly you’ll be using it for. Make sure it can carry the things you’ll need. Use a tape measure to get the length and width. Make a note of these measurements. This will help you build a trailer accurately.

Assemble the Pieces

Get the plywood boards. Cut them to the specified lengths. When you have cut all the sides, attach to the metal components of the base trailer. Most of these bases also have metal rods. This will make attachment to the wood boards easier to do. Make sure that the wood boards are linked securely.

Attaching the Sides

Take one of the sideboards you made and put it on the baseboard. Use a screwdriver to fasten it into place. Get the L brackets. Link one with the sidewalls and the other to the baseboard. This is needed to keep the walls from slipping off when you build a trailer. For this type, 5 inch sideboards will be enough.

Joining the Walls and Painting

Use the L brackets for this part. Put one on each edge. This attaches the board and secures them together. At the same time it’s connected to the base. Check the screws and bolts. They need to be very tight and can withstand rough roads.

Since the structure is almost complete, you can do a paint job now. Use any color you like. You should wear a mask to keep the toxic chemicals from entering your system. Keep it under shelter if it is raining. This won’t be necessary if it is the summertime of course.

Add the Lights

Continue to build a trailer by adding the lights. Fasten two lights on the rear end. Put the wires into a wire harness. This will connect with the light hook in your car or truck. It should come on as when the lights ignite on the car or truck.

Tips

Always go over the measurements and the screws. You don’t want the thing to break down as you are driving down the road. You can take it out for a test drive. See how well it can handle rough spots.

After a long journey, check the screws to see if any have gotten loose. The same attention should be paid to the wheel attachments of course. You should check their condition before and after you travel.

To build a trailer well, attention to detail is a must. Constructed properly, this can serve you for many years.
