How to Build a Trebuchet

If you want to build a trebuchet, there are several things you need to get. To avoid difficulties you should prepare these things first. That way you can just concentrate on the task at hand.

Required Tools and Materials

Sandpaper
Pliers
Metal rod (cylindrical)
Nails
Saw
Marker or pencil
Wood glue
Fabric
Thread
Wood sticks

Wood sticks (these need to be of different lengths. The longest can be 18 inches. The shortest can be 6 inches. Get others measuring something like 6, 12 and 14 inches. These lengths are just approximates. The point is they need to be of differing lengths).

Make Wood Triangles

Mark a diagonal line across a wood board. Begin to build a trebuchet by sawing along the marked lines. Now get two sticks, one longer than the other. Attach the shorter one about ¾ of the way of the longer piece. Make two of these.

Take one of the triangular pieces you made and fasten to the stick. Apply some glue on the triangle. The slant should be oriented to the lengthier side. Put the triangle on the other side. Take a couple of the wood sticks and attach to the sides.

The end result will be a rectangle. The triangular shapes will look outwards. There will be a couple of uptight sticks. Put another small stick in the midst of the foundation.

Securing the Pieces

To continue to build a trebuchet, mark spots in the arms. These will be where holes will be drilled. They need to be an inch away from the topmost part. This is for the axle.

Creating the Arm

Take the metal cylinder and use it as a weight. Fasten it with a string. The distance must be equivalent to the upright sticks or arm. Now you can drill openings in the arms. As it is for the axle, make it large enough for the task.

Mark three spots on the longest stick. This will be where you will make the holes. Hole one will be a quarter away from the edge. Hole two should be an inch away and so is hole three. Drill the holes as you build a trebuchet. Put the axle there. Dangle the wood around it.

Firing

Put a hoop hook near the end of the initial hole. This is near the counterweight. Put a nail on the other end. Chop the head and curve it a little. On the opposite end put another hoop.

Put the axle in one of the arms. Set one of the hooks downwards. Put some stones on one end. This will be counterweight. Hang them by the hook. Get a sling. Fasten one of its ends to the hoop. Set a steel wire atop the nail.

Set a cardboard on the foundation. Swing the arm with sling. Put the object in the sling and release.

Be careful with the objects you hurl. Try them some distance away from people and furniture. Although it can be quite complex, you can build a trebuchet as long as you follow the process.
