Plywood
Measuring tape
Framing wood
Hammer
Saw
A ladder
Corner brackets (metal)
Bolts

Choose the Right Tree

This is the most important element. It has to be sturdy enough to hold a lot of weight. This is especially true if you are making one for big kids. Some of the most popular choices are maple, hemlock and oak. You don’t have to choose a particular type. What matters is that the branches are thick and has a solid base. This is the first priority when you build a tree house.

Start Designing

It doesn’t have to be a fancy architectural drawing. Just make sure there is enough to guide you as you go through the process. Think of how many kids are going up there and how many playthings are to be included. This will help you make the right measurements too. There are some basic plans and sketches available in stores. You might want to check them out too.

Making the Supports and Platform

Take the plywood and cut according to the right measurements. Use a 7 inch bolt to set these beams in the proper location. Do not put the bolts more than a foot away from each other. Measure and cut the boards to serve as the platform. To build a tree house properly, set the platform close to the trunk. Add some diagonal bracing to fasten it in place. You can also use a metal fastener.

Before securing the platform check the alignment. It has to be balanced all around the trunk. If it isn’t located centrally, the structure might sway. The right balance will also help support unequal loads.

Making the Floor and Walls

Use the plywood to create the floor. Make it thick to hold extra weight. Avoid putting gaps between the boards. This will prevent any fingers or playthings being stuck there. Use the saw to cut the walls. Remove any splinters before setting them in place.

Setting up the Ladder

After you build a tree house, you should set the ladder. You can use a rope ladder. While easier to set up, a step ladder is more convenient. Use the plywood or other lumber to make it. Add handrails to the ladder if you think it’s necessary.

Tips

It’s better if you create and assemble all the pieces first before putting any up. This allows you to look at each one carefully. If you are going to paint them, do it now. If necessary you should sand any overly rough corners.

When you are done, put in the toys and their other stuff. Before letting anyone up check the ladder strength. If you painted it, let it dry completely.

The most difficult part when you build a tree house is the thinking. It seems hard. But with the right tools and approach, you can do it.
