Determine the Location

Some base their choice in practical terms so they choose the kitchen. This will do if the structure is of moderate size. If it is very large, it might be better to have an entire wall section devoted to it. Before you start cutting wood, make sure that the area itself has been cleared.

Make the Proper Measurements

Also key to build a wine rack accurately are the measurements. The length depends on available space. It will also be determined by the number you want to put in reach row. The depth must be at least 7 inches though. Shallow depth might cause the bottles to fall out. Another advantage of having a deep container is it keeps the bottle steady.

Tips on Designing

The bottles should be stored horizontally. This is done for two reasons: to prevent dirt from accumulating in the neck area and to maintain the cork’s dampness. When it comes to each slot, you have two choices: the regular square shape or the diamond. Either one will do nicely.

When you build a wine rack, you can make the slot large enough to hold several bottles. This is handy if the available space is restricted. If you have ample room make one slot per bottle. This makes it easier to take out a bottle. You can also create slots for wine glasses as well.

Cutting the Wood

Make sure that the measurements are precise. When you have measured each piece, cut with the saw. Use sand to smoothen any sharp edges and also to remove splinters. Drill holes into the appropriate sections. Secure them tightly with screws. Make the supports as sturdy as possible. If you are going to store plenty of bottles, it should have the strength to hold their full weight.

Finishing Touches

You can also apply paint or stain after you build a wine rack. Any color will do of course. Some prefer to use staining instead. Whichever method you use, make sure to apply the coating properly. Give it as much time as needed for drying.

It is not uncommon for people to place the structure in the cellar, particularly if the collection is large. If you are going to do this, get high quality wood. It needs to be of sturdy material to withstand the lack of atmosphere in the cellar. One of the strongest is oak. You can use other types but be sure to apply staining and fortifiers.

There are endless varieties and styles available for those who want to build a wine rack. You can even ask your friends for ideas. Once you have finished the project, congratulate yourself and pop open a bottle for a toast to a job well done.
