For you to build a wooden deck properly, gather the equipment first. By getting all the necessary stuff ready, you’ll have a simpler time getting work done.

Hammer
Saw
Drill
Nails and screws
Chalk (for marking lines)
Bolts

Framing square
Rail kit
Level
Several wood boards (4 x 4)
Several wood boards (2 x 8 x 12)
Decking
Auger
Cement mix
Screws for the rail
Jigsaw
Circular saw

Make a Layout and Measurements

Prior to construction make a drawing. This should include the appearance of the structure and measurements. Here the example is for a 12 x 12. The process is the same for any. Just get larger boards.

Prepare the Area

To build a wooden deck, start by removing the dirt. Use your shovel to remove rocks and debris. Cut the grass and weed if there are many. Level the ground to avoid difficulties.

Create the Frame

Take the 2 x 8 boards. Make the front and backside 12 ft in length. The side boards must measure 11 ft and 8 inches. Double check the measurements. Insert the side boards in the front and back wood boards. Fasten them into place with the screws (use three 6” screws for each one).

Create the Corner Footers

Use the 4 x 4 boards to make each piece. Make it as thick as needed when you build a wooden deck. Set them into the surface at least 2 ft deep. Pour cement mix until you reach two inches from the topmost part. Shovel dirt around the area. For stronger support set each post no more than four feet distant from each other.

Be certain that the rear board butts up to the house’s frame. Use screws to connect the board. You’ll know you’ve done it right if the posts are level the top part of the posts.

Make the Interior Frame

The number of boards depends on the footers you build. Ideally it should be a single board for every north / south footer. There should also be one board for every east / west bound post. To avoid confusion when you build a wooden deck, set in place the board for the north / south posts first. Fasten each one with at least three screws. If necessary drill a hole.

Put on the Floor

Use the jigsaw to make a 3 x 4 notch on all the boards. Attach the screws in place. Next, cut the wood boards to make the floor. In this case it has to be 12 ft long. You can add a couple of feet for a hangover. Set it in place. Now you can add the railing and some steps.

Painting or Staining

Wear a mask and mix the paint or stain if needed. Apply the strokes evenly and smoothly. Try to keep each layer as even as possible. The same process should be followed when using staining.

Always refer to your plan as you build a wooden deck. This will help you stay focused on the task and make the process easier.
