There is no reason to pay someone to build an awning when you can do it yourself. It is important though that you have these things already close at hand. This will make it easier to get to work.
Required Tools and Materials
Sewing machine
Electric drill
Tape measure
Screw hooks (at least a couple)
Nylon thread
A couple of key rings
Rope (4 sections)
4 grommets
Tape measure
4 stakes
Canvas or plastic
Make Measurements and Hemming
Determine how large you want it to be. Now buy (or if you have it already) sew a piece. Create one that is larger than the actual measurements. You’ll want the extra length for hemming.
To build an awning, hem the corners. You can use a sewing machine. It is also possible to do this by hand. Once this is done, attach the grommet on the cloth. Put each fastener on the corners.
Drilling
Get the driller and make holes where you want to put the cloth up. Make two holes as needed. Put screw hooks into the opening. This serves two purposes: for putting the screws in and also prevents wood splintering.
Get the cloth and put a key ring into each grommet. Now put the key rings on each of the screw hooks. This will be needed when you build an awning as it provides stability.
Adjusting the Cloth
Pull the cloth to get an idea of the pole direction. When setting the poles you have two options: you can dig a hole and plant them in the ground. Another option is to get poles with flattened bottoms. These can be set on even ground. Use a grommet to link the cloth with the pole.
Get the rope and bind the cloth down. Fasten a couple of the sections at the grommet. Pull one and use the stake to keep it in place. Repeat the process for the other poles.
Choosing Materials
There are many materials you can use when you build an awning. Some like tarp. Others prefer different fabrics and cloths. The materials you choose depends on the kind of protection you need. Of course the sturdier the material the more costly, but you should consider other aspects too apart from expenses. Low cost fabrics will often end up costing you more.
Tips and Reminders
The measurements are important. Make sure they are correct. This is especially true if you are sewing the material by hand. If you are making a large one, consider getting assistance to help you set it up.
Double check everything. This includes the grommet, the screws and the other fasteners. Obviously this project should be undertaken prior to winter. The summertime makes it easy to test and repair it.
Even though the process is simple, make sure you follow all the directions. Diverting or taking shortcuts could result in accidents.
There is nothing too difficult if you decide to build an awning. The critical thing, as stated are obtaining the tools. This alone will eliminate a lot of the potential problems.
