Some people may tell you that trying to build stairs is best left to experts, but that isn’t so. By getting familiar with some jargon and preparing the right tools, you can make them yourself.
The Needed Tools and Equipment
Square frame
Pencil and papers (for sketching the layout)
Masking tape
Handsaw
Nails, screws or joist hangers
2 x 12 stringers (the support for the treads)
Riser (this is the height portion of the steps)
Tread (2 x 6; this is what you actually step on as you climb)
Sketch the Layout
Even if you know what you want to do, it’s best to have it drawn down. This will serve as a guide as you go along. Second it allows you to see any potential problems that might arise as you try to build stairs. If you are not sure how to make such a drawing, get an architect or someone qualified to do it for you. This is also the stage where you should plan if you are going to have several landings or not.
Once you have the layout done, prepare the area. Remove any obstructions in the way. Give yourself plenty of room to work with.
Calculate the Needed Steps
A riser can be any height but most use a figure of six or seven inches. With this figure in mind, you can gauge how many steps are needed in total. Remember that the riser height can determine this number you need to build stairs. Assume the overall height is 64 inches. Divide that by 7. Round off the result and that will be the steps you will have to make.
Framing the Steps
Get the square frame to set in the stringers. Use the masking tape to mark the spot of the rise. Set the frame end in the direction of the board. Mark the square. Move the framing square and put another mark. Keep doing this until you get to the end.
Cutting the Steps
Use the handsaw to slice the lumber as necessary. Be careful not to go over the mark. Check the measurements to ensure that it is correct. If this size is right use this as a model for the other steps.
Assembling
Join the stringers together using nails or hoist hangers. Connect them to the deck. When you build stairs you can use screws if you like.
Tips and Warnings
Refer to the building code rules in your area before proceeding. Some will require you to build a handrail if the steps are high. If that is the case, include its construction in your layout plans. You also have to build a baluster as well.
Some stores sell specially designed wood for these steps. If possible use these instead. It is also a good idea to have the entire plan laid out. The components may be few but its creation can be quite complex.
The best way to learn to build stairs is by trying it. As long as you persevere and take the necessary precautions, you’ll be able to construct both simple and elaborate types in due time.
