What Causes Colon Cancer?

Colon cancer is a type of cancer characterized by the abnormal growth of cells in the colon region of the rectum. This type of cancer is also known as colorectal cancer. In recent times, men of all ages have been affected but men over 35 are more prone. Age

One of the greatest factors is the age of a person. Colon cancer is rare in men under 40 years old. The occurence of colon cancer begins to increase after men pass age 40.

Genetics

Having close relatives who have had colorectal cancer can increase the chances of getting the condition. In instances where more than one member of the family has had colon cancer, the risk to other family members may be three-to-four times higher in terms of the chances of developing the condition. Colon cancer then, like most other types of cancer, is hereditary.

Previous Medical History

Having a  history of small growths, such as polyps, that have been surgically removed may increase one’s chance of cancer. These, especially if left untreated for a while, increases an individuals chances of developing colon cancer.

Have a prior history of colon or rectal cancer, if left untreated or if improperly treated, can result in the condition worsening.

Have a disease or condition linked with increased risk. Conditions associated with the rectum must be immediately checked out by a practising medical professional to determine if there is a link with colon cancer.

Diet & Lifestyle

A low fiber diet can cause the condiiton. Or a generally poor diet can lead to colon cancer. Persons who are at risk of developing colon cancer are advised to increase intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while limiting saturated fat and red meat consumption. In addition, people are recommended to limit alcohol consumption and not smoke. Furthermore, the lack of exercise can be what causes colon cancer. The lack of an active lifestyle is proven to be a contributor to colon cancer.

Social Factors

Another cause of colon cancer can be barriers relating to personal opinion. Some persons, for example, consider it against thier beliefs to do the examination for colon cancer. This procedure for the most part entails the insertion of a finger into the rectum. They consider this unholy and immoral on various grounds. Some even posit that the procedure had negatrive social connotations and refuse to have it done. Again, this refusal to do the examination can result in the condition worsening and growing beyond manageable proportions.

Smoking

Long-term cigarette smoking causes colon cancer for two main reasons. Inhaled or swallowed tobacco smoke transports carcinogens to the colon –  tobacco use can increase the size of the polyp.
