How to Make a Cake

The ingredients used to bake a plain cake can be and are usually used for making various other types of cakes. When making those variations the plain cake recipe is used along with other ingredients.

The steps for making a plain cake are usually simple and are generally adopted to bake other types of cakes. The ingredients of a plain cake are inexpensive to purchase and easy to find. If some ingredients are inaccessible, then cake mixes are available to make the baking process easier than making it from scratch. If you have chosen to make a plain cake from scratch, the ingredients you would need are:

  • 4 oz of butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cups of flour
  • 1 cups of sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp lime juice (optional)
  • 1 tsp almond (optional)
  • 1tsp vanilla essence (optional)
  • 3/4 cup milk

Steps for how to make a cake


Step 1: Preheat the oven to 180 C or 360 F
Step 2: Melt the four ounces of butter
Step 3: Sift and combine all dry ingredients, except sugar, into a large bowl
Step 4: Use an Electric Mixer to beat butter until it is smooth
Step 5: Add sugar to the melted butter and smooth mixture using Electric Mixture
Step 6: Add eggs to the mixture of sugar and butter
Step 7: Pour the mixture in step 6 into the bowl with dry ingredients and add milk, then mix until smooth
Step 8: Add almond, vanilla essence and lime juice to the mixture in step 7 (the lime juice will reduce the rawness of the eggs),and mix until smooth
Step 9: Grease baking pans with grease paper and margarine (this is to prevent the cake from sticking to the baking pan.)
Step 10: Pour mixture into the baking pan and allow it to bake in the oven for approximately forty- five (45) minutes.

If you chose to make a plain cake from boxed mixtures you will need the following ingredients:

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of oil
  • 1 tsp Lime Juice (optional)

Generally a cake mix will tell you what you need to add and give you the instructions that you will need to follow, some cakes mixes need additional steps, and as a precaution the general steps to follow are listed below:

Step 1: Ensure that the oven is preheated to 180 C or 360 F
Step 2:  Beat eggs until the white has disappeared
Step 3: Add water to the cake mixture and mix it along with the oil until smooth.
Step 4:  Add the egg mixture and lime juice to the mixture in step3, mix until smooth
