How to Bake a Sweet Potato

One of the most popular and widely used starchy crops, a sweet potato is rich in nutrients that are important to our health. Potassium, phosphorus and magnesium are examples of nutrients that people can get from this crop. In addition to these nutrients, it is rich in beta-carotene, iron and vitamin B6. In the other parts of the world like North America, the crop is also known as yam. One of the cooking methods that can be applied to retain the vitamins and nutrients present in yams is baking. In order to know how to bake a sweet potato, it is important that you have ideas about the ingredients that you can combine with a yam to enhance its natural flavor.

Easy Baked Sweet Potato

The ingredients for this recipe are easy to find and are not expensive. To make this healthy snack, you need a medium size sweet potato, three tablespoons of sour cream and a tablespoon of milk. Moreover, you need a tablespoon of brown sugar, a tablespoon of butter and 1/8 teaspoon salt.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Get a fork and pierce the yam. Place the yam in a small baking dish and cook inside the oven for 45 minutes to an hour. Make sure that the inside part of the crop is tender. Remove the yam from the oven and remove the top part of the sweet potato. Use a spoon to remove the flesh of the yam. Mash the flesh in a large bowl. Add in the milk and sour cream to the mashed yam. Mix in the sugar. Continue mixing until it becomes fluffy as well as light.

Scoop the mixture to the shell of yam. Set the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and preheat. Bake the yam for 25 minutes to half hour. Remove from the oven carefully and serve immediately.

Crispy Sweet Potato Bake

For this healthy but delicious side dish, you can add three cups mashed sweet potato, ½ cup butter, a teaspoon of vanilla flavoring and ½ cup milk. In addition to these ingredients, you need two eggs, a cup of brown sugar, 1/3 cup all purpose flour, 1/3 cup butter and a cup of chopped pecans.

Mix the mashed yam, ½ cup butter, vanilla flavoring and milk. Beat the eggs and add to the mashed yam. Transfer the mixture to the baking dish. Top the yam with brown sugar, all purpose flour, remaining butter and pecans. Place the dish inside an oven that was preheated to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook for 25 minutes.
